Action Learning Sets
Action Learning
Coaching in Partnership can design, set-up, facilitate and then enable self-facilitation of Action Learning Sets (or Peer Coaching Workgroups). ALS are one of the most effective ways for people to share work-related problems and find solutions. The process is not limited to organisations, they can be internal or external, they can be multi-disciplinary, whatever you can creatively conceive, Action Learning Sets can support.
The action learning process allows each Set member to explore problems and issues in dialogue with the Set, i.e. using active listening, coaching questions and the resources of other members to describe and clarify the issue, reflect and then decide upon a course of action all in an encouraging and confidential setting.
Sets are a key feature of the ‘Learning Organisation’ in that they provide a structure in which skills, e.g. communication styles, can be continuously reviewed and enhanced; they impart a culture of active listening and learning within the organisation and they are flexible as to membership, duration and focus. Moreover, the set trains itself with the help of the facilitator so the process models participation and responsibility, empowerment and collaboration.
Many Sets continue self-facilitated after the initial sessions, often becoming permanent features in organisations.
What are the benefits?
Action Learning enables you to:
- plan and make important changes
- plan work and other projects
- receive feedback from your peers
- learn first hand from others
- expand your range of skills
- get to know what works and doesn’t work – for you and your team
- value your own skills and experience
- examine any limiting beliefs about your own abilities
- make thinking time for yourself
- deal with the effects of stress.
Action Learning is non-judgmental and values your own particular mix of experience, abilities, skills and knowledge. It is at the same time challenging, in asking you to make commitments to yourself and to the Set.
