For many of us, a new year brings opportunities for improvement through goal setting. We call such goals “resolutions” at this time of year and human beings are notoriously bad at achieving them. In fact, over 90% of us will not follow-through on our resolutions. Too often we base New Year’s resolutions on improving on our weaknesses as opposed to building on our strengths. Positive psychology tells us that we’re much more likely to achieve goals that are crafted in alignment with what we’re naturally good at and inspired by.
So why not create our resolutions and goals to improve upon our best characteristics and strengths? These are the gifts we are blessed with and it seems contrary to not want to strengthen the very things we are good at.
Often resolutions are more like wishes, not goals. Take a look at any resolutions you may have set so far this year – what do you notice?
During our coaching sessions, we focus on building on strengths and learn to differentiate between needs, wants and desires, whilst creating a plan to get you there. In fact, the average psychological intervention, feedback session, or executive coaching session improves desirable work outcomes, such as job performance, by half a standard deviation. That means that 70% of individuals in a control group — who did not receive any feedback or coaching — would perform below the average of the intervention group. Our independent ROI found similar.
This weeks Coaching Gym, will focus on the science behind strengths-based goal setting and our FREE GIFT this week will leave you with five tips for setting strengths-based goals this year.
Often we look at self-improvement as ways to break bad habits, lose weight, and exercise more, etc. Or if related to work our employer may push us to get more reports written, problems resolved or whatever our job role may be. Often people fail to do better at something because they don’t naturally have a knack for doing it. There is little motivation to develop those skills.
Here’s another approach that I find effective – strengths swaps. If you are good a project planning, offer your planning services as a swap for something you are not as good at. Maybe ask your boss if you could be assigned more project planning tasks instead of problem resolution cases. Just be up front stating that you enjoy the planning activities and they’ll likely agree that your projects are done on time and within budget.
Mention that when it comes to problem resolution, that doesn’t play to your strengths. {Here’s a great place to place praise on a co-worker who is great at solving problems.} Chances are your boss will recognize that he’ll get more projects completed by accepting your suggestion. Maybe there’s a project in the support area you could take on that would improve problem resolution rates.
This is a win-win for you, your boss and maybe your problem solving team mate will get some recognition too.
I’ve got a few more surprises regarding the history of resolutions packed into my eBook “Resolution Revolution”
